BMX Jumps - More Thrills From Your Bike
BMX jumps are performed by specially built BMX jump bikes on dirt tracks. The riders are judged according to the standard of stunts performed.
BMX stands for 'bicycle motorcrossing' and BMX jumps refer to dirt jumping performed by BMX bikes. Dirt jumping is a sport where bikes ride over mounds of dirt or soil. The aim is to momentarily keep the bike airborne after riding over a mound and then land on the 'landing'.
Dirt jumping is a 'free sport' meaning riders participate for fun, rather than competition. However, with increased popularity of dirt jumping, the sport is becoming competitive and companies now sponsor dirt biking tournaments to promote their products.
Dirt jumping evolved simultaneously with BMX racing. It differs from BMX jumping in that the jumps are higher and the aim of the competition is not to be the fastest but to perform the best tricks. Course tracks are often hand made and attention is given to details.
Types of jumps
'Double' the most common type of jumps: These are jumps on two separate earthworks, one for the take off and the other for landing.
'Tabletop' is the most common jump among new comers. It consists of a single earthwork with the take off at one end and the landing at the other end. There is a flat 'table' at the top. New riders prefer tabletops as it allows them to easily ride out of the jump in case they come up short.
'Ski jumps' consist of only a take off and the jumps are longer and flatter. They tend to be located on downhills, so the slope of the hill can serve as a landing. Ski jumps are mostly performed in competitions for jump lengths.
'Roller' a small tabletop jump gives you extra speed by 'pumping' the jump. These are usually found at the start of a trail.
So, its time to get your own BMX jump bikes and start riding on the wild side.
