Cycling Knee Injury – Some Basic Dos and Don’ts

If you want to avoid cycling knee injury, you have to take certain precautions and safety measures. As a regular cyclist, you should pay attention to your legs, especially your knees as these bear the maximum strain of cycling.

Common causes of knee problems

It is true that cycling is a good form of exercise, but when done vigorously it can lead to severe types of knee problems like tendonitis and trauma. If you are inclined to overtraining as a cyclist, better take note as this habit could cause painful inflammation out of unnoticed misalignment of the body. If you fail to take timely care, this problem could persist and lead to permanent damages of the tendons or cartilage.

How to prevent knee injuries

If you are already suffering from knee problems like swelling, provide icing on the infected spot and go easy on the following day’s ride. But it is better to take the following steps for eliminating the problem from its roots:

1. Check your body alignment on your bicycle and equipment functionality

2. Get hold of the right cycling gear like shoes, helmets and knee-caps

3. Ask a chiropractor to monitor your training and point out defects in postures

4. Avoid sharply rising mountain routes to reduce strain on knees

5. Try indoor cycling on rollers or a turbo-trainer
